Background
This animated music video was produced as part of the Radar Festival competition for Psapp, purveyors of charming sideways pop.
The video uses cut-out elements to tell the story of an epic sea journey. But who is friend and who is foe?
The textural quality of physical materials was an important starting point for the animation. Individual elements for the characters and environments populating the story were sketched, painted and finally assembled like an array of airfix kits in the computer.
Deliberate restrictions on the ways the elements were manipulated helped to develop interesting and amusing ways to represent the action. Yellows, oranges and browns were selected to build the tone for the bold backgrounds, to represent the opposing sides in the story and to set up a relief for the focus of the animated characters.
